Welcome 1/2 2016

Start of Year

Hello 1/2 Families,

Welcome to the 2016 school year. We are looking forward to an exciting year full of learning, creating, discovering and collaborating together. We hope you have had a great start to the school year and are familiar with the morning routine.

Our doors are open at 8.30am for parents to come and speak to homegroup teachers. The time between 8.30-8.45 is only for parents and teachers to be inside. At 8.45am students are invited to come inside and get organised for the school day before heading outside for a quick play before the first bell at 9am.

This year we will use the blog to communicate with families, ask for parent helpers, notify families of important dates, showcase student learning and experiment with student blogging. If you would like to receive emails to notify you of new posts, please subscribe to the 1/2 blog for updates.

This year the 1/2 students will have Physical Eduction on the following days:

1/2 Purple, Red, Orange and Yellow:  Mondays and Fridays.

1/2 Blue, Green and Silver:  Thursdays and Fridays.

Please remind your child/ren to wear their sports uniform to school on these days. On the remaining three days of the week, students are required to wear their normal full school uniform.

Specialist days are on Fridays of every odd week. Term One sees the 1/2 students engage in the specialist Program in Weeks 1, 3, 5 and 7 (Good Friday falls on the Week 9 Specialist Day).

Please come in and make yourself known to all the teachers and have a look around the learning space.

If you have any questions please see your child’s homegroup teacher.

GORCC Rock Pool visit

We had a great time looking and sea animals and plant life on Tuesday with Pete from the GORCC. We learnt the importance of protecting the plants and animals and making sure that we put back anything we have a look at. Thanks to all the Mums who came out to help us 🙂 and a big thanks to Pete for sharing all his knowledge with us. We are so lucky to live in Torquay!

Art in our Learning Community

We are very excited to have finished our plans for our Ted Harrison inspired artworks. A lot of children loved the sea landscape and the whale piece. As result we have a lot of beautiful ocean scenes being planned! Kids in 1/2 thought hard about their choices of colour, thinking about warm and cool colours and how they make you feel.

This Wednesday’s art session will involve us beginning our art pieces. Can’t wait!

Here is some of our plans.

Art in our Learning Community

Ted Harrison

For the next 3 weeks, students in 1/ 2 will be looking at the art works of Canadian artist Ted Harrison. Students will work in pairs to create their own art work based on his style; focusing on line, pattern and colour. Please clink on the link above to view some of his works.

Look at what Sari and her brother have been doing at home! They have been inspired by Ted Harrison’s beautiful artwork. 🙂

1/2 Planning Discussions

Last week, the 1/2 teachers had a great discussion after reading educational research focused on student grouping, learning and ICT.  We developed two diagrams after sharing our insights:

Off to Mass

PLEASE NOTE:  We are not visiting the Library until Wednesday, May 27, 2015.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

This Wednesday (May 13), half of the 1/2 Learning Community are participating in Mass at the St. Therese Church.  The remaining group will participate in Mass next Wednesday (May 20).  We are attending as Literacy Groups, therefore, your child may be going with a teacher other than their homegroup teacher.  This arrangement works best as it is the least disruptive for those not attending Mass and staying at school.

The groups are as follows:

Adam, Chelsea and Irene’s Literacy Groups

Chris, Vaughn, Gerard and Sarah’s Literacy Groups

Your child will know who they have for Literacy, but in case they are unsure please check the list below:

Literacy Groupings

If the weather is unaccommodating then we will be travelling by bus, otherwise, we will walk as per usual.

Everyone welcome to attend!

Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee Outings

We have joined forces with the Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee (GORCC) to visit the beaches of Torquay and learn more about our area.  There are 4 different activities and 6 groups.  Students have been asked to sign up to an activity on Tuesday, April 21 in which they’d like to attend.

These are as follows:

Wednesday, April 22 – 12.30 – 3pm – COASTAL WALK/Fishos (Adam)

Thursday, April 23 – 8.45 – 10.45am – ROCK POOLS/Cosy Corner (Chelsea)

Tuesday, April 29 – 12.30 – 3pm – DUNE ECOLOGY/Fishos (Gerard)

Tuesday, May 12 – 9 – 11.30am – COASTAL FAUNA/Fishos (Sarah)

Tuesday, May 18 – 9.30 – 11.30am – COASTAL FAUNA/Fishos (Rachael)

Tuesday, May 26 – 9.15 – 12.00pm – ROCK POOLS/Cosy Corner (Sarah)

We would really love to have parents join us for the walk and activities.  If you are free and available please email Adam on acoustley@sttorquay.catholic.edu.au with the date and time you are free.  We need a minimum of 2 parents with each group and will have to cancel the session if we don’t have the numbers.

Thanks for your continued support!

Helper Roster

For those who missed the Parent Info Night, please note that a fortnightly roster will be posted in each home group space on the Monday following Specialist Day (Fridays of odd week).  Please fill this out if you would like to come in and help out.  All helpers welcome!

***Please note, we ask you to have a Working With Children Check (WWCC) which you can pick up and lodge at the Post Office.  Also, please remember to sign in your presence at the front office when coming in to help out.

New Groupings

Hello Everyone!

This week (Week beginning Monday, March 2, 2015) the students will be starting in new Literacy and Maths groups.  This means that they may come home talking about other teachers with whom they have spent time.  These groupings will remain the same for the rest of the Term.  If you have any questions please see your child’s home group teacher who will be more than happy to help you (or led you to the right person).  Remember, email is the easiest and quickest way to receive a helpful response.

Hope everyone enjoys the week ahead!

Reach Vietnam

If anyone is visiting the blog over the holidays don’t forget to visit the ‘Reach Vietnam’ blog using the link on the righthand side of this page.  You can see what the teachers are up to and leave comments for the girls from the convent!

Taylor’s Park Outing

We will be leaving at 9:15am and returning to school by 10:50am.  Parents are welcome to join us!

Parent Information Sessions

How do students learn to be confident and discerning readers and writers?

How can we best prepare and support our children for the 21st century?

What strategies will our children need to solve mathematical problems in the real world?

If you have wondered any of the above questions, and wish to discuss them with other parents and teachers in our community, then you may be interested in the following information sessions. This term we are offering three parent afternoons and an evening to share ideas and discuss learning and teaching.

The afternoon sessions will be held each Tuesday afternoon for three weeks beginning in week 5 at 2.15 pm until 3.15 pm in the hall.

Session 1- Tuesday May 20: Intro to 21st century Learning and Literacy

Session 2 – Tuesday May 27: A contemporary approach to Literacy Learning and Teaching.

Session 3 – Tuesday June 3: Maths  – A contemporary approach to learning and teaching Numeracy.

Session 4 – The evening session Wednesday June 18 @ 7pm. This is a combination of the first 3 sessions and as such will have a slightly different presentation mode, it will also take place in the hall.

You are very welcome to attend all sessions or, if that is not possible, just attend one or two sessions. Please let us know if you are interested in attending by emailing us. Thank you to all those parents who have already replied and we look forward to seeing you.

Kind regards,

Anne Jordan  ajordan@sttorquay.catholic.edu.au

Dena Reddan  dreddan@sttorquay.catholic.edu.au

Prayer Pots

In the 1/2 Learning Community each home group has made a clay prayer pot to use during Lent.  We have been adding items each day, however, due to holidays we will be unable to add the final items.  Perhaps you could make a prayer pot at home (or use a flower pot) and finish off the activity!  Check out this link: https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/activities/view.cfm?id=1247

P.S. Thanks Mrs Richard for finding this activity for us!
