Author Study – Andy Griffiths

In 1/2 we LOVE Andy Griffiths. He is one of our favourite authors in the whole wide world. We are doing an Author Study on Andy Griffiths and we even included his best friend and illustrator, Terry Denton.

Andy Griffiths has written heaps of book, 28 to be precise. Lachlan discovered that fact for us during Investigations. Some of his stories include The Bad Book, Just Annoying, Just Doomed, Brave Dave and Big Fat Cows. They are very funny!

Our teachers also love Andy Griffiths and Miss Daly got us the brand new book called the 65 Storey Treehouse. We have already read the 13, 26, 39 and 52 Storey Treehouse books and we can’t wait to start the new one today! I wonder what else has been added to the treehouse (hopefully no more sharks)! Lachlan wants it to have a whole level made out of chocolate. Tobey wants to see some quicksand and Brody wants a football stadium with all the Saint Kilda players.

It would be amazing if we could meet Andy Griffiths one day and learn more about him.

What would you include in your own treehouse?

What is your favourite Andy Griffiths story?

Story Time

This week we have started a new unit in Religion. Our topic is called ‘Stories of God’s People’. We have been listening to some of our favourite books and reading stories from the Bible.

Part of this unit requires students to bring in a favourite book from home to read with the class and discuss the characters in the story. If you have a favourite book at home, you can bring it in on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday for us to use in our Religion sessions. Make sure it has your name on it somewhere.

This unit also has a big focus on storytelling. We would like the students to have a discussion with their families at home and get someone to tell them a story about their family – perhaps some family history, maybe a story about mum or dad when they were little or any other story about your family. Feel free to add these stories to the blog as a comment on this post so we can all read your story and discuss them throughout our unit.

We hope you enjoy this unit and the opportunities it provides to share in the wonderful pleasure of storytelling.

Kitchen Garden

In 1/2 we have been very busy setting up our kitchen garden. We walked to Bunnings to buy herbs for our herb beds in the Asian Garden and we have also planted lots of nutritious vegetables in our gardens outside the 1/2 building. We are now caring for the gardens and waiting for our food to grow.

In the meantime, we have investigating recipes and things we can cook once our food is ready to harvest. We have made smoothies, brownies, stir fry and muffins. Next we are going to make pesto!

Here is our recipe for the super healthy sweet potato brownies we made last week. They are delicious and a fantastic snack for your lunch box. We hope you enjoy them!

Sweet Potato Fudge Brownie
s

Nut Free, Vegan, Dairy Free, Gluten Free and lunch box friendly

INGREDIENTS

1kg Sweet Potatoes, 2 medium/large ones

100 grams Chocolate – we used Loving Earth Blue (Creamy Coconut)

½ cup Coconut Oil

4 tablespoon Chia Seeds

½ cup Water

2 tablespoon Raw Cacao Powder

1/3 cup Coconut Flour

1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

2 tablespoon Rice Malt Syrup

STEPS

  1. Heat your oven to 180 degrees C. Place whole sweet potatoes on a roasting tray and stab a couple of times with a small knife. Then roast until super tender depending on the size minimum 1 hour, but can take up to 1.5 hours. Make sure you line the tray as they ooze out sugary syrup.
  2. Once roasted, remove from the oven and allow to cool enough so that you can handle them. Carefully peel and scoop out the flesh and place in a large mixing bowl. Mash the sweet potato until smooth.
  3. In a separate small bowl or jug, mix the water and chia seeds together. Set aside for around 15 minutes for the chia seeds to soak up all the water.
  4. On the stove or in the microwave, melt the coconut oil and chocolate together and stir until well combined.
  5. To the bowl of sweet potato mash, add the melted chocolate, the chia seed mix, vanilla extract and rice syrup and give a good stir. Finally add the cacao and coconut flour and mix together. If you have a blender or food processor, you could simply scoop out the sweet potato flesh and add all ingredients and process until smooth.
  6. Spread the mix into a lined 24cm x 24cm baking dish and bake for 50-55 minutes at 180 degrees C.
  7. Allow the brownies to cool to room temperature and then chill in the fridge before serving, ideally overnight (or if you are like us and can’t wait for them to cool down you can eat them warm). We topped ours with fresh strawberries as well.

Holidays

Welcome to Term 4. We have so many exciting things happening this term!

I hope everyone has had a lovely break over the holidays. I know the teachers did. We had some beautiful weather that was perfect for the beach and spending time outside. We also got to watch the Hawks win the AFL footy grand final and catch up with family and friends.

What did you do during the holidays?

Who did you see?

Where did you go?

What was the most exciting part of your holiday?

We would love you to comment and tell us all about your holiday.

Published Work

The teachers in 1/2 have been amazed with some of the wonderful writing we have seen in our learning community. If you would like to share your writing with other learners you can post a comment with your published writing on our blog. I can’t wait to read some of your amazing stories and adventures. You can even comment on other peoples writing and give them feedback on what they have written.
